A majority of users are scanning well beyond the first page of search listings, often 3 - 5 pages deep.

A survey by KnowledgeStorm and MarketingSherpa, conducted online in April, shows user trends shifting toward a more sophisticated target.  The poll of more than 3000 technology buyers and marketers showed that most start their search with Google.com.  But, their behavior is evolving beyond the first page or pages of the popular search engine.

56% of users search on phrases of three words or more.  53% are now scanning beyond the first page of search listings, often 3 - 5 pages deep.  “This is major information for marketers as they rush into search engine optimization,” said Matt Lohman, Director of Market Research at KnowledgeStorm.com.  “It confirms that users are moving beyond high-level, one-word descriptors. That forces marketers to be a lot more strategic and focused in their SEO.”

According to the survey, 66% of marketers say they have an organic search straegy in place.  56% claim they are getting good results from their SEO efforts. The survey also found that 50% of buyers said they provide a valid name, email, industry, job title and company name when they register for web content, downloads, webcasts, etc.
